The church was inaugurated in 1823 when Vitsand was allowed to form its own parish. It was built in the form of a cross. Gradually, the tower, vaults and wooden boarding were added.
Originally the church was red, but today it is painted white.
The pulpit was made in the parish of Fryksände (Torsby centre), probably at the end of the 17th century. It was donated by the church of Fryksände to the new church of Vitsand.
Olle Hjortzberg painted the altarpiece around 1937 as a replacement for the painting that now hangs on the wall of the northern transept. The baptismal font dates from the 1920s and includes a silver basin made by W. Forslund of Arvika, following the model of the local artist Per Telander.
