Hertha Hanson, born in 1980 in Lund, Sweden, is a Swedish abstract painter educated at the Malmö Art Academy from 2004 to 2009. She is represented by Anna Bohman Gallery in Stockholm and has exhibited solo at institutions including Kristinehamn Art Museum, Rackstad Museum in Arvika, Galleri Lilith Waltenberg in Malmö, and Bror Hjorth’s House in Uppsala, as well as in numerous group exhibitions.
The artist’s own words about her painting:
“The process is central to my painting and is permeated by the passage of time and slow transformation. For me, the power of painting lies in the encounter between human and object. My paintings are their own history of becoming. Through paint, they carry layers of movement that meet the material, the human encounter with matter in front of them.
Since 2012, my paintings have formed a slowly growing series. When I stretch a canvas, the painting is assigned a number that follows the previous one. Even discarded paintings retain their place in the series and are present through their absence. At the time of writing, the series consists of 564 paintings.
My studio work is concrete and material. In the encounter with matter there is a silence, something hidden, a relationship to something both familiar and strange. The hidden and the act of concealment are essential elements in my paintings, where covering the surface is the very foundation of the work. There is no possibility of unveiling or exposing without destruction. There is no core to reach. What exists is the hidden and the relationship; the moment and being.
The painting has a duality: it is both the linguistic resonance of surfaces we carry in memory and the concrete surface we encounter in the moment. The transcendent happens through the viewer’s inner experience, through the journey inward to other moments and experiences we hold within us. The concrete is the mystical; we are here, now, in something intangible.”
