Klarälvsbanan winds its way through the landscapes of Värmland, stretching from Karlstad in the south to Uddeholm in the north. Along the route, you pass through Forshaga, Deje, Ransäter and Munkfors. The trail follows a former railway route that has been fully paved and is car-free, creating ideal conditions for a safe and nature-friendly experience.
Along Klarälvsbanan, the scenery gradually changes – from open farmland in the south to the deep forests of northern Värmland. In Uddeholm, Klarälvsbanan ends and connects with Klarälvsleden. From here, you can continue north towards Sysslebäck and follow the trail through the beautiful Värmland countryside.
At the southern entrance to Klarälvsbanan, there is also a signposted cycle route stretching from Kroppkärrssjön to Mörudden on Hammarö – a distance of 10 kilometres.
Klarälvsbanan through Munkfors Municipality
As Klarälvsbanan enters Munkfors Municipality, it passes Ransäter on the eastern side of the Klarälven River. On the western side, visitors will find accommodation options and, during the summer season, museums and cafés.
In Munkfors, the trail continues through quiet residential neighbourhoods and past the historic ironworks area – a place that still reflects the town’s industrial heritage.
Shops, restaurants, accommodation and other services are all conveniently located close to the trail. Those wishing to take a break along the way can also explore cultural sites, visitor attractions and nature experiences in the surrounding area.
Information about the Ransäter Bridge Closure
Period: 25 May–20 October 2026
The closure of the bridge in Ransäter does not affect travel along Klarälvsbanan itself. The trail remains open and accessible throughout the period. The closure only affects visitors planning a detour to the area, for example for accommodation, dining or other attractions located on the opposite side of the Klarälven River.
Traffic information: The bridge is closed to all traffic, including cyclists and pedestrians. A signed diversion route is in place via county roads 733, 801 and 814, as well as Route 62.
Open most of the year. Winter maintenance may vary between municipalities, but most maintain and clear snow from the central sections.
