Klarälven – Experiences for Everyone

A constant companion throughout our area

Klarälven

The Klarälven River offers experiences for everyone – fishing, beautiful views, paddling, and barbecue moments. It has long been a natural part of our area, with clear waters that have provided food, power, and transport routes.

Klarälven has always been important to our region. It has provided livelihoods for many people, and its power has driven sawmills, ironworks, glassworks, paper mills, and hydroelectric power stations. The river has also been an important means of transport for both people and goods. Klarälven was the last log-driving river in Sweden and remained in use until 1991.

Varied Fishing

The river offers varied fishing opportunities in both fast-flowing and calm waters. If you are lucky, you may catch perch, pike, grayling, ide, burbot, salmon, roach, tench, or trout. The website fiskekartan.se provides information about regulations, prices, and which fish species can be found in different areas.

To fish in the area, you need a valid fishing permit. Fishing permits can easily be purchased online and apply to specific waters and time periods. By following the rules and purchasing a fishing permit, you contribute to sustainable fishing in Forshaga – helping future generations enjoy nature and fishing as well.

Find Your Own Favourite Spot

Bring a picnic basket and enjoy the surroundings along the riverbanks. Perhaps you will have a picnic at the old ferry landing in Edeby, by the power station in Deje, near the cycle bridge in Skived, or somewhere completely different. At the Forshaga Canal, there is a cultural trail that passes the locks and follows the stone-lined barge canal. Here, you can learn more about the canal’s history, and at the canal entrance there is a rest area with barbecue facilities.

Follow the Current

Travelling along the river brings you close to nature and wildlife. You might spot a beaver working on its lodge or a moose coming down to drink by the water’s edge. When the water level is low, large sandbanks form along the inner bends of the river. Stay towards the outer bends to keep to open water. If you do not have life jackets, they can be borrowed free of charge for the whole family from Fritidsbanken in Deje.

We Advise Against Swimming in Klarälven
