This nature reserve is protected to preserve a unique mire landscape and its rich flora and fauna. The diversity of habitats in the reserve supports a wide range of species. Plants such as alpine rush, clubmoss, and cotton grass thrive in the wetlands. The marsh orchid population in Horsstomyren is considered one of the largest in the county. Many bird species also inhabit the reserve – including cranes, waders like wood sandpiper and green sandpiper, and ducks such as goldeneye and teal. Grouse and willow ptarmigan can also be found. Among mammals, elk, hare, and fox are most common, but pine marten, lynx, and even bear occasionally pass through the area. A trail map is available at Långbergets Sporthotell.
Hike through the forests of Storberget, where spruce branches are draped with beard-like lichens and fallen logs are covered in soft moss carpets. Explore the fascinating Horsstomyren mire, with its sloping fens and small pools, home to diverse wildlife and rare plants. In the mire, you might find marsh orchids and hare’s-tail cottongrass, while the forests are home to birds such as Siberian jay and three-toed woodpecker. With a bit of luck, you might even spot an elk, a hare, or a wandering bear.
