Järnet födde staden – Iron Built the Town
The exhibition’s name, Järnet födde staden, refers to the important role iron played in the development of Kristinehamn and in providing a living for the people who lived here. The exhibition also includes fun display boxes for children to explore.
Learn how and why Kristinehamn became a town. Kristinehamn became an important centre for the iron trade, partly because iron was shipped from here across Lake Vänern and onwards into the world on bojorts, traditional sailing vessels used to transport iron.
The exhibition was created by the museum staff together with set designer Bo Jonzon and a specially appointed working group for the town’s 375th anniversary in 2017.
Kristinehamn was previously called Bro and was granted town rights in 1642 by the regency governing Sweden on behalf of Queen Christina. The town was then named Kristinehamn in her honour. A bojort is included in the town coat of arms, showing how important these vessels were to Kristinehamn.
