At Uddeholm, the Klarälvsbanan connects with the Northern Klarälvsleden.
Here you can choose whether to continue your journey along the river or turn off and pass Hagfors on your way north. A few kilometers south of Ekshärad, you pass Sun Dance Ranch, where you can stop for a coffee break or treat yourself to a horseback ride. Further north, you will find Profossdammen, where there are opportunities for fishing or even overnight stays in a traditional Lapp tent.
The road now slowly winds upward toward one of the area’s major tourist attractions – the beautiful Brattfallet, with scenic hiking trails and a lovely waterfall that invites the brave to take a dip. From Brattfallet, you have a steep descent down to the bridge on the west side of the river, where the trail continues on a gravel road surrounded by beautiful old buildings and large farms.
If you need to stock up on supplies, there is a small shop by the petrol station in Värnäs, on the opposite side of the river. The trail continues along the western bank of the river, and when you reach Månäs you will find a picnic shelter with a barbecue area near the bridge by the riverside – an ideal place to stop for a break if needed. A few kilometres further on, you will pass the road leading to Hjällstad. If you would like to cross over to the Fryksdalen valley using quieter back roads, this is a good option. However, unless you are familiar with the area, you will need a map to find your way.
Branäs
The Klarälvsleden continues towards Branäs. Before you get there, you will pass the small Knappnäs Nature Reserve on your right, beside the river. Just north of Branäs, you can make a detour across the river to visit Utmarksmuseet with the Pilgrim Tapestry and Dalby Heritage Center. The final stretch to Sysslebäck offers plenty to see and do. Don’t miss Naturpralinen, where you can join a guided tour of the chocolate factory, delicious handmade pralines and enjoy their own homemade ice cream.
At Karlstad, the Klarälvsbanan continues as the Southern Klarälvsleden
The final stage of the Southern Klarälvsleden stretches for 10 kilometres between Karlstad and Hammarö. Nearby, Hammarö’s Cultural Heritage Area, offers Iron Age burial grounds, the medieval Hammarö Church built in the 1300s, a local heritage museum, to the Archipelago Museum. Discover the scenic Pilgrim Trail, an easy walk of just over one kilometre along the shores of Lake Vänern, or follow the QR-coded heritage trail with 20 numbered stops, each sharing stories about the area’s history and natural surroundings.
The trail ends at Mörudden, where you will find a restaurant, a campsite, a kiosk, accessible bathing areas and parking.
